What is sustainable tourism and why is it the perfect combination with cycle tourism?

Sustainable tourism and cycle tourism, what a nice couple!

And even more so now that people are aware of the importance of new tourism models. They must be respectful of the environment and the local culture.

In this post we tell you what sustainable tourism is all about and why it makes a perfect match with the bikes we love so much.

Let’s roll!

What is sustainable tourism?

Sustainable tourism is a way of discovering places in a way that respects the ecosystem.

In other words, minimizing the impact on the environment and favoring local culture.

It costs nothing to take public transportation or a bicycle to enjoy the places we want to visit.

Therefore, sustainable tourism for us is not a fad. It is a way of life.

And cycling is our favorite way to enjoy it, which also allows us to do sporting activities.

What are the objectives of sustainable tourism of sustainable tourism?

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sustainable tourism “aims to meet the needs of tourists as well as tourism destinations, while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future”.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Among the objectives of this organization are the following:

  • Improve the quality of life of the local population, the people who work and live in the tourist destination.
  • To offer the best experience for the visitor.
  • Preserve the environment and keep it in the best condition for locals and tourists.
  • Ensure greater economic benefits for local residents.

In a way, it is concerned that the visitor enjoys as in any other type of tourism, but that the benefits are not only taken by large multinationals, while preserving the environment to curb rural depopulation.

What types of sustainable tourism are there?

Sustainable tourism is not exactly a type of tourism, but the modality to which we should aspire.

However, several typologies can be included in this framework.

Keep rolling and discover them!

Responsible tourism as a form of sustainable tourism

Responsible tourism is tourism that engages with the environment in some way.

We know, being responsible is a bit ambiguous.

Therefore, we bring you some examples to make it 100% clear to you.

  • Minimize the impact on the tourist destination.
  • Generate economic benefit for the host community. For example, staying in local hotels and establishments instead of chains.
  • Respect the indigenous population.
  • To conserve the natural and cultural heritage.
  • Use public transportation or bicycles.

Simply being more conscious of each of our actions so that they do not damage the environment we move in.

Solidarity tourism and its particularities

Solidarity tourism is tourism that goes beyond traveling to enjoy and discover a new place.

Its objective is to assist in the development of an area.

It is usually linked to the work of an NGO in a specific destination.

Although actions in African countries are common, there are more and more places in our country where help is needed.

3. Agrotourism, a type of sustainable tourism on the rise

Agrotourism is one of our favorite activities at CiclaMadrid.

It consists of discovering the rural areas that you do not know. What we like the most is that it allows you to enjoy top landscapes without being saturated with tourists.

You can discover the rural world, the countryside, small villages and a great gastronomy.

We get hungry just thinking about those delicious dishes that can be eaten on a good cycling route.

4. Ecotourism, concerned about the environment

Ecotourism is tourism that is concerned with the conservation of the environment and also takes place in nature.

As you can see, it is very similar to other types of tourism such as responsible tourism.

In this case, the most important thing is the preservation of the natural environment.

Why are sustainable tourism and cycle tourism the perfect combination?

As we told you some time ago, cycling tourism is the tourism modality in which the bicycle is used as a means of transportation.

That’s why it goes so well with sustainable tourism:

  • It allows you to get to know the destinations you visit in depth.
  • You can discover more places in less time and make the most of the experience.
  • You get to places that trains or buses don’t reach, usually smaller rural destinations.
  • You use a non-polluting means of transportation and help preserve the planet.

Not to mention the freedom of schedule it gives you and the fact that it is a much more economical model.

Benefits of bicycle tourism for the planet

As we told you, the main beneficiary is the planet.

In fact, these are some of the benefits of traveling by bicycle:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. While a cyclist emits approximately 21 grams of CO2 per kilometer, a car emits 271 (according to the European Cyclists’ Federation).
  • Carbon footprint reduction. Bicycle travel accounts for only 5% of carbon emissions (according to a University of California study).
  • Care of nature. Bicycles make it possible to reach inaccessible areas without damaging nature or roads.

However, it also helps you because you breathe fresh air, save money and practice sports.

But above all, it makes you enjoy the experience to the fullest.
